Recommended: Orient Mako Sport 40

I reckon the Orient Mako Sport 40 is the best-looking affordable watch you can get your hands on right now. While I identified one truly bizarre (but fixable) flaw in my review of this model, I was nonetheless blown away by its beauty. From the moment I unboxed it, the purple dial color and white markers immediately struck me as something unique and extra special.

Up close, the Mako Sport looks far more expensive than its modest price tag and even trumps rival brands Seiko and Citizen in terms of beauty; garnering a 9.2/10 style rating from me. I’d definitely watch some video footage of this watch to see what I’m talking about.

Thankfully, it’s no slouch in terms of specs either. It’s got just about everything you’d want from a dive watch: high water resistance; a sleek case design (which is the best Orient has cooked up so far); a new, grippier crown, and a reliable movement.

The stock band is awful quality (though other colors ship on a bracelet), and this model, perhaps due to the smart-casual design, lacks a lume pip. Nevertheless, the only major issue was that the first production batch of these watches shipped with a hilarious chapter ring printing error, which I showed in my review.

Orient is set to relaunch this watch in late 2023, and when it does, expect it to sell out immediately; this one is a killer! It’s also available in three additional colors, so go wild!
