Recommended: Timex Expedition North Series

Timex revamped the cheap Weekender series, transforming their low-end brass tickers into high-quality steel field watches, under the Expedition North banner. I was very impressed during my review, especially with the highly-capable solar option.

Timex Expedition North Mechanical

As you may be able to tell, the Field Post Mechanical resembles the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical in several ways, with a comparable layout and somewhat similar dimensions. While not as elegant as the Hamilton, this Timex feels just as durable and is very tempting for around half the cost (or less).

It’s extremely legible, has a good stock band, and comes in a couple of different colors that do appear more attractive than this white one. My main frustration (outside of the somewhat generic design) is that the hands fall fairly short of the markers.

Timex Expedition North Mechanical Specifications:

  • 38mm diameter

  • 11mm thickness

  • Unnamed hand-wound mechanical movement

  • Stainless steel case

  • Sapphire crystal

  • 100m water resistance rating

Timex Expedition North Solar

Out of the two, I preferred the 36mm solar alternative. To be clear, Timex also makes this one in a 41mm size, so it’s worth considering even if you have a bigger wrist.

These cost less than the mechanical options but look slightly better-proportioned (with hands that properly extend across the dial) and retain all the best features of the more expensive model while not worrying about winding or battery changes. I also prefer the colors and dial options of the Expedition North Solar watches, which are among Timex’s best-looking military options. I think these are a great casual option.
